S. John Nafziger was born in 1802 in Bushing Lottering. Germany, and for some time resided at Kurtza Road, Germany. Anna(Garber)Nafziger, his wife was born in 1807 and resided near Bushing Lottering. They were united in marriage in Germany in about 1832. In the fall of 1837 they emigrated to America. With them were some relatives and friends including Christian Esch. grandfather of Rev. Ben Esch and Solomon Esch who settled in the same locality in America. This was quite a a trip for them to make considering the difficulties of travel of that day. The route was by the way of New Orleans, up the Mississippi River, then on the illinois River to Peoria. The ocean was crossed by Sailboard requiring 43 days to get to New Orleans.. John and Anna Nafziger made their home during the first winter with Chris Nafziger, brother of John, who lived four and one half miles north of Metamora, illinois. The following year, 1838, they purchased from Mr. Brownfield a tract of land about three and one-half miles northwest of Washington Here they lived the remaining years of their lives. After they had settled in America, they looked forward to the time when Mr. Garber and his wife, the parents of Anna Nafziger would come. This proved to be a sad disappointment to them. They started their trip to America also taking the New Orleans route, but while coming through Memphis, Tennesse, they were detained due to yellow fever and never recovered. They were both buried at Memphis. Our appreciation to Loweil Nofziger of Wadsworth, Ohio for information on his family line. Lowell is a descendant of Christian Nafziger who children emigrated to Fulton County in the 1850’s... . Our thanks to Alfred J. Nafziger of Pettisville, Ohio for sending us material on the Christian family line that settled in Fulton Codnty, Ohio. The material will be used in a publication that we are preparing on the Fulton County Nafzgers.... Wehave received a nice letter from Frank Nofsinger of Sturgis, Michigan. He is provided information on Valentine Nafziger (landed in the U.S. in 1831) descendants who are scattered throughout the U.S. Two of the sbhs settled in Fulton County, Ohio and we have decided to include the family line in a publication of the Fulton County Nafzgers. Incidently, Frank is a descendant of a third son of Valentine who settled in Branch County, Michigan.... The breaking plows were of the walking type and the prairies in many places had never been broken or cultivated before. Small grain was bound by hand as there were no binders. Grain was threshed by machine but quite inferior to the present thresher and combine. Corn was shelled by being scattered on the floor after which it was trod over by horses. Shelled corn was sacked and marketed in Peoria as Washington then had no grain market being without railroad facilities, thus, farming in this day was difficult. Perhaps, if we were to work under such conditions. we might say it cannot be done or complain.. Besides following the occupation of farming with its many disadvantages, John Nafziger took an active interest in spiritual matters. When in Germany, he was an active member of the Mennonite church and ordained minister. After comming to America, he retained his religious convictions as an active minister of the Gospel. At the time there was no public Continued on Page Two Commendation Much of the material for this issue of the NEWS has been reprinted from a publication prepared by Emil Kinssinger and sent to us by Grace Nafziger of Washington. Illinois. Emil Kinsinger of Washington, illinois first began gathering information and had it printed in booklet form in 1939. A later booklet was printed in 1955. Katherine Goyns of Peoria, illinois undertook the task in 1972 and until her death in 1974, had worked long and hard on the project. Cathryn Camp was secretary of the Nafziger reunion in 1974. She volunteered to continue the work. She has been assisted by Mabel Esch. The cover page was designed by ‘Mrs. Harold Esch. Nafziger. Enclosed please find a sketch on him. His tombstone calls him Christian B.. but this sketch refer to him as G. B. Christian P. Nafziger. There is no doubt that it is the same man, as the dates are the same and his grandchildren showed me where he is buried. His father, Jacob Nafziger is buried north of Minier. Illinois and his mother, Catherine(Nafziger)Nafzi ger is buried at Stouts Grove Cemetery by Danvers, Illinois. Catherine died several several years before jacob I finally found Christian’s wife’s obituary. She also was a Catherine(Nafzi ger)Nafziger. She was a sister to Henry Nafziger(1832-1897), son of a Jacob Nafziger( 1800.1881) and Elizabeth Rockey. She had two surviving brothers listed in the obituary, C hristian P. of Tonica, Illinois and Jacob of Gottenberg, Nebraska... I would like to know if there are any descendants from them so I could complete the list of their father’s descendants.. I recently met Robert Nafziger from Believille, Kansas. His grandfather was Augustus Nafziger. a brother to C. B. Christian P. He is listed in the sketch also. Augustus moved to Kansas. I would have written sooner, but I didn’t have this figured out yet. This family line intermarrying with Jacob Nafziger line is very, very confusing because of using the same names on both sides of the family.. MARION NAFZIGER Stanford, Illinois I have been going to write sooner but we have had a busy time of looking for a house for my daugher and her husband. I have some very old pictures of great aunts and uncles of grandfather Jacob Noftsger and my father Henry which I will forward to you... MRS’ FAYE(NOFTSGER)FLAUGHER Westchester, Ohio Editor’s Note: We will be happy to reprint the old pictures. Please do not send them in the mail as they may become lost. Look for a photographer who will reprint them and let us know of the cost involved.. We have been somewhat confused by your ancestors because of some recent information. There is some connection to the Jacob that landed in America in 1750 because of dates found in an old family Bible in Wilmington, Ohio. But there is strong indication that the father of Jacob who married Amanda or perhaps Jacob and Amanda entered the United States in a port not yet determined and settled in northern Kentucky. We are searching for data which confirms that he moved into southwestern Ohio(Brown County) from Kentucky and entered the U.S. in about 1810.... Thanks to Ralph Naffziger of Visalia, California for information on his Naffziger ancestors. Ralph is a descendant of two Naffziger lines. if I have it figured correctly, he is a descendant of Peter of Groversheim and Peter of Uberau. Ralph sent us data on his line to Valentine Naffziger, born in 1805 who married Katherine Naffziger. They emigrated to America in 1840.. JOHN AND ANNA ENTER U .S. This bric k church was perhaps one of the first Mennonite churches in the statesd. Nine children were born to John and Anna. Peter and Katherine were born in Germany and they made the long voyage to America with their parents in the fall of 1837. The other sev en children were John, Anna, Lena, Barbara, Joseph. Elizabeth and Phoebe. Family Reunion I am sorry that it has been so long since writing to you to report on the Nosker Family Reunion that was held in July. Thirty six persons were in attendance. The 1977 Nosker rcunion promises to be the largest one we have had thus far. It is to be held in the Legion Park at Watseka, Illinois. Dean Nosker of St. Louis will be the 1977 chairman. We are interested in contacting other Noskers throughout the United States to invite them. We plan to place articles in newspaper where a number of Noskers are known to live such as Kankakee and Watseka, illinois and Coshocton, Ohio. Anyu help will be great I appreciated... MRS. N. A. COOPER East Gary, Indiana Editor’s Note I will forward you some Nosker names and addresses we have on file at the NEWS, It would be nice to invite them to the reunion. Please write to us to confirm the date and time of the 1977 reunion so we cam make the official announcement in the NEWS.... Thanks to Dorothy Miller of Whittier. California for information on her family line. Dorothy is a descendant of Rudolph Noffsinger who landed in America in 1749.... Letters We are in receipt of a long letter from Paul V. Hostetler of Hamden. Connecticut. We appreciate his letters because they usually look at the various Nafzger family lines as they relate to other Amish-Menno nite families that lived in the same area. Mr. Hostetler writes of many points of study and historical interest. One point which he mentions in his last letter which must be studied is as follows: “If I recall correctly, we were a bit puzzled that a Matthias Naftsiger was the Executor of Jacob’s Will. At the time, I had in mind only the two men of that name who were in Berks County -. but it didn’t make sense that Jacob would select a man as executor who lived so far away. But in view of what we now know about Ulrich’s family, it may well hay e been the bachelor son of Ulrich who had the same name”. Also, the quote from PAUL SUGGESTS THAT Ulrich who landed in 1742 and Jacob who landed in 1750 may have been closely related. Could it be that Jacob is a son of Ulrich?. THE NAFZGER HERITAGE NEWS i zo EDGEW000 DFIVE GI OHio 44044 . . . PAGE TWO ‘Our car was trapped; the rain was getting heavier Fate stepped in to save Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Noffsinger, 824 Lakeside Drive, who were caught coming down the canyon and saw cars ahead and in back of theirs swept away by the wall of water which claimed many lives Saturday. Noffsinger has a cabin above Estes Park and was hosting a reunion with several relatives this weekend, but the couple decided to return to Greeley Saturday night to give more room in the cabin to the guests. According to Flora Noff singer, who is paralyzed with multiple sclerosis, they were driving their four-wheel drive vehicle down the canyon when the light began falling. “We started out before seven and there were only a few drops falling,” she said. “But by the time we got about five miles below the village it was raining heavily and we began to be a little concerned.” She said about that time a state patrol car passed theirs and they thought they would follow him down the canyon. “But a huge spruce tree fell across the road just after he passed us. Our car and two behind us were trapped and the rain began getting even heavier. The two other cars backed up and went across the road, which we thought was foolish becuase it was lower ground.” Mrs. Noffsinger said they then saw the wall of water come and sweep those two cars down the canyon and go down after the state patrol car. “They were by the Stockdale Motel,” she said, “and the cars looked like little tm cans bob bing in the river.” They were saved as Noff singer found a “little hole” on Lhe side of the canyon wall, opposite a curve in the road. “Immediately, the river was over the banks and washing the road away,” Mrs. Noffsinger said. “The torrent was a sheet from one wall of the canyon to the other. We could see people crawling out of the Stockdale and making their way up the muddy cliffs, slipping and sliding.” The Noffsingers stayed in the safety of their car, although they did consider trying to crawl to higher ground if the water climbed any higher. “Later, some people came down the hill to us and helped improvise litter to carry me up the mountain to an unoc cupied cabin, which was apparently the only one there that survived.” When rescue workers began arriving Sunday, Mrs. Noff singer and a man from the Stut..dale who suffered diabetes shock were the first victims evacuated from the canyon and taken to the Loveland hospital. “We were so Fortunate, I just can’t believe it,” she said. “One woman who was with us in the cabin was the owner of the Stockdale Motel and she said she didn’t even consider rebuilding it. The damage was just awesome and we were so lucky to be safe.” She added that her husband, who had previously suffered two strokes, was wonderfully calm and poised through the crisis. POLITICAL ADVISOR Mrs. Leona Connor send us an interesting story from the Los Angeles Times. BOYD NOFTSGER Leesburg, Ohio IU•UUUUU We have received the information sent to us by Galen E. Kline of Carlisle Pennsylvania on the Frank Kline-Minnie Nofziger family line. This family line connects to Valentine whb landed in America in1831. . . Recent visitors to the Naftzger home in Grafton were Mrs. William Mottice of Navarre, Ohio, Mrs. Leona Baughman of Massillon. Ohio and John Nofsinger of Kalkaska, Michigan. Mrs. Motiice and Mrs. Baughman are daughters of John who is a very active 73 year old with a good memory for detail of his family line. Thus, we were able to fill in many dates to his family line that were missing. It would appear that John is a sixth generation descendant of Matthew-Matthais who arrived in America in 1749.. We have received a nice letter fron Nadine M. Walker of Litchfield, Illinois with data on Polly Noftainger Gish. Nadine is a descendant of Peter Noffsinger who landed in America in 1749 through the Moomaws which crossed this family line a number of times down through the years... PAGE FOUR Letters . Enclosed is some material I have been saving all summer for you. Do you have any new data on my John Noftsinger. A lot f missing links to our family line are being found but it seems that cannot uncover anything to connect John who is buried in Navarre to one of the early Nafzger families in Pennsylvania. I have sent for a book that is a reprint of a rate book from Somerset County which I hope will help us with the problem MRS. LAURA CLAPPER Mansfield, Ohio Material included with Mrs. Calpper’s letter were many articles clipped from a number of newspapers and articles of interest to Nafzgers copied from historical documents and books. Many thanks for the material. The John Noftsinger referred to in Mrs. Clapper’s letter was born in 1782 and died in 1846. His wife Elizabeth was born in 1795 and died in 1869., Their children are John, Samuel, Jacob, Catherine and . two others whose names I do not have. We hsve been unable to document the parents of John. At first, we believed him to be the son of Henry Naftzinger whose father was Mathias who landed in 1749. Thurlow Nofziger of Toledo visited the Naftiger home in Grafton recently and provided the information on the Christian Nofziger.Natiiger line. The list of descendants is quite lengthy. We are in the process of setting the type for this publication. Harley Nofziger of Archbold has been providing information for Johannes Nof,i ger’s line on a regular basis over the past two or three ears. It would appear that the list of descendants for this line ill never end as new material pour in. Frank Nofsinger of Sturgis. Michigan has been providing information on descendants of Valentine Nafziger. It would appear that the project is going to be much larger than we had originally planned. It sould appear that we may have ten tousand descendants identified in the three Natigcr lines.. Sherman is a descendant of Jacob who landed in America i 1750. We expect to visit with him and his family in the near future and have plans to visit the small town of Burbank which was laid out by John Naftzger, a great grandson of Jacob and the great, grcat, great grandfather of Sherman Stuart Henri Yost of Philadelphia raises an interesting point which should be studied by all. We have heard many times that Peter, Rudolph and Matthew’)mATHI ALL Nafzger who landed in America must have been brothers. Stuart asks about the possibility of a father and his two sons landing in 1749. The possiblity is a very real one when you look at the vague dates of the birth of the three men and their children... Letters I have thoroughly enjoyed the Nafzger Heritage News despite the fact that I still haven’t place my Elizabeth Naftzinger in any of the established family lines. An added bonus to your newsletter is finding mention of some of my other lines. I was a Hostetler before my marriage and, incidentally, Paul Hostetler, whose contri bution appeared in the last issue is no father’s first cousin. It was nice of you to publish my query in the last two issues. I only hope someone might come up with the answer to the Elizabeth Nafzinger question. MRS. KENNETH H. Until we received her letter, we thought Martha Mrs. UhI copied some information from a family Bible that indicated her John Noffsinger came from Germany when he was nine years old. Out records would indicate that John was born in 1780 and with Mrs. Uhl’s information, it would mean that John entered the U.S. in 1789. Until we received her letter and according to the records found in the Belmont County courthouse, John’s father is Mathias Noffsinger who isd a son of Rudolph.
